We were blessed with great weather this year for Perrysburg High School's Career Day. We had the opportunity to talk with Freshman and Sophmore students about what we do and how they could pursue the career of Firefighter/Paramedic. We teamed up with Penta Career Center and their firefighter program teacher Paul Perry. Trades are all the buzz again and we wanted to let the Perrysburg students about the opportunity Penta gives them to graduate as a firefighter II.
Students were able to get their hands on some of our equipment as well as have a bit of fun going through a quick obstacle course. They pull some hose, used a sledge hammer, dragged a 160# Mannequin (simulating pulling someone to safety) and finishing with CPR to the tune of Staying Alive.
Our second station was the entaglement box brought by Penta. The entaglement box is a training scenerio to simulate being entangled by wires or anything that could entangle the Fire Fighter. The student puts on a mask that simulates "black out" conditions with an air pack on and trys to move through the box. If you get tangled you must try to untangle yourself without being able to see.

Finally, the students were able to learn about some of our EMS equipment. More specifically, our airway equpment and "train"onhow we intubate a patient and protect an airway.
The students were able to use a lyrangescope and learn more about our King vision which has a camera for us to visualize the airwaybetter. We also showed the students our Intrasseous equipment.
The students were given a real hands on experience and get a small taste of what fire fighters do. We "think" the kids enjoyed it. Sometimes it is hard to read a teenager. lol. We stressed how Perrysburg Fire is currently hiring Part time fire fighters and EMT's. Once they graduate from High School they can take their EMT-B over the summer at Owens CC and work for us!
Even Sparky got in the action!
